New York City. Summer.
A series of violent and highly successful bank robberies have been carried out across the city, all by the same five-man team. Millions of dollars have been stolen. The thieves are slick, efficient, well-organised and vicious. The FBI are getting nowhere in tracking them down. With pressure from Washington mounting and the heists continuing, the Feds desperately search for any leads.
They need results and they need them fast.
Across the city, Sam Archer is in town for a funeral. At the service, he is approached by an old family friend who works out of the FBI’s New York Office. He’s leading the case against the thieves and has a proposition for Archer. He needs the English counter-terrorist cop to go undercover, and try to get inside their circle. Make contact and gain their trust. Find out the secrets of their success. Given his English accent and his cover story, it’s a solid plan. They’ll never connect him to the FBI. Nevertheless, Archer is ready to refuse, but his old acquaintance tells him something else, a shocking revelation that ties Archer to this case personally. It’s all the convincing he needs.
He agrees to the plan, and goes undercover.
As he establishes contact with the crew and gets deeper and deeper, Archer learns they’re planning to leave the city for good in just a matter of days, but only after performing two final spectacular heists. In a race against time Archer is forced to think on his feet or be killed as he gets caught up in the lethal crossfire between the thieves and law enforcement, none of whom know who he really is. As the clock ticks towards the thieves’ departure and as the stakes get higher and higher, Archer must both find a murderer and prevent two of the biggest heists in the history of New York City.

What a welcome surprise to read this book and find it very professionally done! No glaring spelling, grammatical, editing errors. It was wonderful not having to spend reading time trying to figure out what the author meant. Could just read. WOW!! This book had great characters, plenty of twists and turns, easily read sentences. After reading the first book in the series, I decided to continue reading the series. Well, I wasn't disappointed. This book was action packed from beginning to end. The one that I enjoyed the most was the setting that this book took place in. Since I live in New York, I knew pretty much exactly where all the landmarks in the book were located. I can't wait to read the rest of the books in the series.
This is the second in the Sam Archer series that I have read. I enjoyed book one better, but still gave it 4 stars. I liked the story. A bit drawn out when describing the City and referring to the first book. This book took place in New York City. I found the lack of switching dialects when a non-British speaking character was speaking a little distracting. Expressions like petrol instead of gas coming from a NY cop. Don't want to spoil the book so will only list one occurrence. But, again, just a distraction, I still like the book and will read the next one in the series.
My 2nd Sam Archer novel and I liked it. This time the story was all about Sam, as opposed to the 1st book in the series (Nine Lives (Sam Archer Book 1)) which featured Sam's team, and he had a middle size part in the story.
This one started slow but then got going in high gear with the action department. I will read the 3rd book in this series real soon (Blackout (Sam Archer Book 3)) especially since I found out it is available as a Unlimited book.
If you like police action thrillers you will like this one. I would suggest starting off with the first book so you can get to know Sam and his team. Bad action movie plot? Nah, but it would be a fun action movie for sure.
This was a 3.5, so I decided on 4 stars. I liked the characters and the twists. While some of the scenes were a little over the top (exaggerated), I still enjoyed the non-stop action. Like so many of these type books, the protagonist can accomplish things the FBI and police cannot. Stuff that to the side and you'll enjoy Archer.
Remarkable writing skill from this young man, just the right amount of emotional dilemma, plenty of "shoot 'em up bang bang" a handsome British hero and a determined American heroine who not only has to hold her own in a mostly male and dangerous career, but has to raise a daughter to be as fearless and cautious and independent as she is. This is actually my second time with this book and it was just as good this time. As a matter of fact I put it on the free bookshelf at work and I hope whoever got it enjoyed it as well.
I'm a fan of Barber's, yet even the best of stories drift a tad far from reality at times. There is more than sufficient evidence to put the bank robbers away long before the end of the story. Some of it was pretty glaringly obvious. But then, that would have made it a novella and I would have been disappointed by the shortness of the story. And then there was a whole lot more going on than simple robbery. Clean editing for a British author. A very enjoyable, fast paced, action thriller. I'm reading these out of sequence, but they're still great reading.
Gave 5 stars to Nine Lives and thought how much better can this get!!! Just finished Getaway - better and better - again dynamite characters and edge of your seat story line. The future looks bright for Tom Barber and Sam Archer. Starting Blackout today. Would love to see movie version of Nine Lives - especially as terrorists are front and center in the world today. Such great writing and great reading- Love it!!! Pam Stratton
